When Dutch Captain Willem de Vlamingh, sailing the West Coast of Australia in 1696, found a small island populated by what he thought were rats, he named it Rottnest. The rats turned out to be Quokkas - small marsupials. Now, Rottnest is an A-class Reserve, aiming to preserve the island and protect the native wildlife while permitting humans to visit and enjoy the beautiful bays and beaches of this tiny island.
